Name: Lestat de Lioncourt Nicknames: To most, just Lestat. To some, the Brat Prince, the Damndest Creature, or other varying forms of 'bastard.' To his maker, and to those who want to be particularly cruel, Wolfkiller or Lelio. Aliases: Lestan Gregor, among others. Age: in appearance, about 22. Chronologically, about 220.
Powers: Vampire; able to read minds, close-off thoughts, communicate with other vampires without speaking (except for his fledgelings). Can fly, move so quickly humans can't see. Preternaturally strong. Can heal any wound in the blink of an eye.
Handicaps: Sunlight, though it doesn't bother him as much as it used to. As he's aged, and gained power from drinking the blood of elder vampires, the sun has become less of a threat. Fire is somewhat of a problem, but, again, Lestat is so strong now he can heal just about any damage.
Emotionally, his handicaps are Louis, arguably his favorite fledgeling, and his mother, Gabrielle. He has an intense love for all of his fledgelings, and sincerely believes that they are 'his' and no one else's.
His love of attention is so extreme it is almost crippling; one night, soon after becoming a vampire, he returned to the theater where he worked as an actor and went onstage, flying up to the rafters and shocking the audience. Lestat does not understand that he is not the center of the universe.
General Appearance:Lestat is six feet tall, which, as he notes, 'was fairly impressive' in his day, and also 'is not bad now.' He has blond hair, like his mother, and a face similar to hers. He was chosen by Magnus for his beauty, and for physical perfection. His eyes are violet, and so unnerving to humans that Lestat finds he often has to wear sunglasses in their presence. He is, as one would expect of a vampire, unnaturally pale, and has been known to sunbathe until his skin reaches a less shocking shade. His fingernails are like glass, another point that causes problems in interaction with mortals. It's something they notice, Lestat says, and he tries to talk them out of what they're seeing using his mind-reading gift.
But if that doesn't work, all Lestat has to do is smile, easily hiding his fangs, and he wins over any onlooker.
He's graceful and lithe, partially because of genetics but also because of his vampiric blood. Catlike is a term that is easily applied.
Lestat never grew out of the 1700s; he still favors lush fabrics and gothic fashions. He's thrilled that a portion of the population put that back into vogue.
Other physical quirks: Very sensitive about the mention of his losing an eye. When Lestat met Memnoch the devil, and followed him to hell, his price for escaping was one of his eyes (though it eventually was returned to him, along with a note that made him lapse into catatonia). His right eye is always slightly bloodshot because of this ordeal.
Special abilities:Silver-tongued; lovable, despite his maddening personality. Owns more property than one would think, under his various aliases, and is business savvy.
Relatives: Brothers and father are long dead. Mother: Gabrielle de Lioncourt, whereabouts unknown. Fledgelings: Louis de Pointe Du Lac Claudia, deceased Nicholas de Lenfent, deceased. Gabrielle de Lioncourt David Talbot Mona Mayfair*
Occupation: Independently wealthy, thanks to piles of treasure left to him by Magnus, and several wise investment schemes over the last century. Still collects royalties for his band and rock tour, as well as for his autobiography and books, which, he would tell you, Anne Rice did not write.
Education: Attended theological school with the intention of becoming a priest until his father yanked him out of classes—something Lestat never forgave him for.
History: Lestat de Lioncourt was born in the small village of Auvergne, France, where his father was the Marquis. He was the seventh son, born into wealth and privilege. ("If memory serves me right, and it does less and less, my name is compounded of the first letter of each of my 6 older brothers' names, all of whom- the brothers and their names- I grew up to cheerfully and vigorously despise," Lestat says in Blackwood Farm)Despite this, Lestat originates from humble beginnings. Lestat, who greatly resembles his mother Gabrielle, became the hunter of the family. During the cold harsh winters and the brutal summers, Lestat set out on horseback and provided his family with food.
During a particularly bad winter, villagers complained of about five wolves coming down the mountains and harming the livestock, and even some lives. The family looked to Lestat. Lestat gathered his beloved mastiffs, his horse, and a plethora of old family weapons, and set out to slay the wolves.
Imagine Lestat's surprise when he encountered not five, but eight wolves. Lestat, however, was rebellious and tired of life. This, along with the death of his dogs and horse at the mouths of the wolves, propelled Lestat forward. Without as much as a second thought for himself, Lestat successfully killed the wolves.
To show their gratitude, the villagers gave Lestat a red velvet coat and boots, both lined with the fur of the dead wolves. Nicolas de Lenfent, the draper's son, presented the gifts to young Lestat. After playful whispers and winks, the two departed. Gabrielle, Lestat's mortal mother, encouraged her then anti-social son to become friends with young Nicolas de Lenfent.
The two quickly became close friends. They would spend uncountable hours at the local inn drinking and talking. Lestat questioned Nicolas unmercifully about his time in Paris. Lestat made elaborate plans to run off to Paris with Nicki. Nicolas humored him and went along with it.
Then one night during a big celebration, Gabrielle told Lestat that she was going to die. Her dying wish to have Lestat, her favorite son, run away from his horrid home existence and make a living in Paris. Lestat quickly grabbed Nicolas and the two made their Conversation a reality.
Paris, however, was not the city of dreams as Lestat thought. They ended up poor. Lestat took a job as an actor and Nicolas, who was trained by Mozart, played the violin. All seemed well.
That was until Lestat de Lioncourt caught the eye of a mad vampire.
Lestat caught the eye of the mad alchemist vampire, Magnus. Magnus, for reasons Lestat still has yet to uncover, fell fatally in love with Lestat and turned him into a vampire. After briefly outlining the existence of vampires, Magnus orphaned Lestat by throwing himself in the fire.
The newly turned Lestat was confused and attempted to live life as he always had. When he received a letter from his mother, who was dying quicker than she thought, Lestat ran to her and turned her as well. Nicolas was maddened by this because he was left in the dark and wondered where both Lestat and Gabrielle went. In an attempt to rescue Nicolas, Lestat turned him as well. Nicolas, sadly, did not survive.
Eventually, Lestat made his way to the New World, settling down in New Orleans. Once there, he met and became infatuated with Louis de Pointe Du Lac, eventually turning the young man. The two lived together in a constant state of turmoil, which only worsened when Lestat turned a five-year-old girl, Claudia.
Claudia and Louis became very close, and made an attempt on Lestat's life. Claudia slashed his throat and threw him into a swamp. But he survived.
Recouperating took time. Once it was done, though, Lestat found his way back to his New Orleans… and into the limelight. He took up with a band, called Satan's Night Out, and decided he was going to be a rock star.
He was successful, until he aroused the attention of the world's oldest vampire, Akasha, who rose and destroyed most of her progeny. The two had a sort of love affair, ending with Akasha's death.
After many trials and tribulations, Lestat stands before both the immortal and mortal world as legend. His stints included breaking the longstanding Children of Darkness, run by Armand, traveling the world for answers, finding out the history of the vampires, finding the deathly alluring secret of Those Who Must Be Kept, becoming a rock star, switching bodies with a human, meeting God and Satan, and finally becoming immersed in the most notorious witch family, the Mayfair Witches.
Lestat, to state it simply, has done it all and is still seeking to do more.
Personality: Self-absorbed and clever. Passionate and proud. Overall, Lestat tends to be an extreme brat. He tends to gloss over his faults and exaggerate (or make up) his virtues. "I'm not a pragmatist, understand... I could have been a nice guy," he says.
